Special Education

Children (ages 5-20) with special learning needs are entitled to a free and appropriate public education. Parents/legal guardians who believe their child is a student with a disability should contact the Special Education Department of their child’s school.

Special Education encompasses a variety of services, different instructional methodologies, small class sizes, materials, and equipment to support the student with disabilities.

After reviewing a variety of assessment information, the need for special education services is determined by an IEP Committee. If the student is eligible for special education services, and an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is developed to address the student’s individual educational needs.

Libraries/Media Centers

The Media Centers in each of the buildings support the instructional needs of its students, faculty and other members of the learning community. Due to the rapidly changing information age, library resources need to expand its mission into preparing students to become literate, lifelong learners.

Each elementary school student is scheduled for library classes each week. During that time students are able to use the resources to meet their curricular and recreational needs. Students are encouraged to enjoy reading. Our libraries have electronic databases for research, computers with high-speed internet access, and software for student use. Our High School and Middle School teachers use these facilities to conduct research projects with their classes, and to encourage academic and personal reading.

Music Department

The Jefferson Music Department strives for excellence in music education and the musical development of every student. Elementary school students explore music through movement, vocal, and instrumental opportunities.

Instrumental music continues when the student reaches fifth through eighth grade as an elective band class. Young musicians can perform in the 5/6 grade band performances and the 7/8 grade performances.

Music education continues at the secondary level with students having the opportunity to become involved in Jazz Band, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Flag Core, and Pom Poms. Each year the high school band performs and receives honors at State Level Competitions.

Art Department

Jefferson’s art program (K-12) has been designed to align with the State of Michigan standards for art education. The art curriculum is designed to teach students how to create, analyze, and critique their own and others’ art as well as finding individual enjoyment through art. Parents and students are encouraged to visit Art museums and exhibitions.

Physical Education

Jefferson Schools’ physical education, health, and wellness programs encourage students to develop a personal life long active life style. The curriculum encourages physical fitness, sportsmanship, and safety in all sports or recreational activities. Coursework encourages good nutritional habits and health habits.

Computer/Technology Skills

Computer classes are offered K-12th grade. Our intention is to provide students with a consistent approach to computer skills that can be applied to learning in any class. Applications and skill programs give the students opportunities to learn keyboarding, word processing, the use of graphic organizers, web page design, creating effective presentations, internet research, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, video editing, C++, Visual Basic, and Dreamweaver.
